Ruins

We keep reaching back into the embers,

fingerprints pressed to the shape of old burns.

Maybe this time, we tell ourselves,

the heat won't tear through the skin.

It's an odd kind of comfort,

a house that's already on fire.

At least in the smoke, we know where to stand,

at least in the ruin, nothing takes us by surprise.
